The Floating Compass

a New Product from Igaluk Lunar Energy:

An inspiration from the Vikings:

The floating compass is inspired by the navigation methods used by the Vikings many years ago. Their navigation was based on the Earth's magnetic field. They used a magnetic rock on a piece of driftwood to locate north, even on cloudy days.

English version starting at 30 seconds.

Combined with modern tools:

The compass designed by Igaluk Lunar Energy only becomes operational when it is floating on water, because it is then no longer under the effect of the Earth's gravity, which prevents it from orienting itself out of the water.

The floating compass uses a variety of materials enabling, flotation on water, high-precision laser engraving with precise orientation of the 4 cardinal points, and the use of an highly-magnetic material.

The winning combination of these different materials has enabled us to produce a modern Viking-style compass that is accurate, weather-resistant, buoyant (so it can't be lost in the water), resistant to variations in atmospheric pressure, and much more resistant to mechanical breakage than conventional compasses.
